Position Title: Barista

FLSA Status: Non-exempt 

Position Overview 
Pasadena Waldorf School is seeking a part-time barista to support its Squirrel’s Nest Coffee Cart operation. The Squirrel’s Nest Coffee Cart is an important part of daily community life at Pasadena Waldorf School, a social enterprise run by the School’s Development department. Its primary function is to build and strengthen relationships within the school community, and secondarily, to raise money for the school. Outside of daily morning service, the Development office uses the Squirrel’s Nest as a base of operations when on the Machris Mariposa Campus and to host one-on-one meetings with key stakeholders regularly. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as barista on school mornings at the Squirrel’s Nest Coffee Cart 

  • Greet and engage customers in a friendly and helpful manner, make quality beverages, and process point-of-sale transactions 

  • Maintain a clean and safe workplace. Cleanup duties at the end of shift will take approximately 15 minutes 

  • Close and lock trailer 

  • Ensure customers exit campus once Squirrel’s Nest is closed, and lock any lower parking lot or pedestrian gates 

  • Take weekly inventory of coffee beans, dairy, non-dairy, and other supplies from local Grocery Outlet market, or online suppliers (max 1 hour weekly) as needed 

  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with customers to drive repeat business 

  • Performs various duties as assigned 

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, pivot, expedite, and fulfill orders in a limited timeframe. Maintain a calm demeanor and controlled environment during peak traffic times 

  • Ability to safely operate a variety of appliances including espresso maker, toaster oven, electric kettle, refrigerator, and water pumps 

  • Maintain a friendly, outgoing, engaging, and welcoming attitude to all customers which include parents, students, school employees, and visitors 

  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and empathy in all customer interactions 

  • Effective interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills, including ability to address customer concerns and resolve issues  

  • High School diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree preferred, commensurate work experience considered  

  • 1+ years of barista experience preferred; training provided as needed 

  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn the unique cultural work environment of a Waldorf school  

  • Previous experience working in a school environment preferred  

  • Strong organizational skills with heightened attention to detail 

  • Adherence to the policies and procedures outlined in the PWS Employee Handbook is mandatory 

  • Respectful, courteous manners and being punctual are required 

Compensation: 

  • This position is part-time, non-exempt, hourly position working approximately. 7-9 hours per week.  

  • Squirrel’s Nest hours of operation: 8:00-9:00AM 

  • Regular work hours approximately. 7:50–9:20 AM, Monday through Friday, with additional time for weekly inventory. Hours may be extended based on coverage and business needs 

  • Pay range is $16.90-$19.00 per hour 

Reports to: Donor and Communications Officer

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods. The employee must frequently reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear; stand and walk; bend/stoop/twist/squat/kneel; fine motor manipulation. The employee must regularly lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Anything over the weight limits should be done as a two-person lift or with a mechanical lift.  

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. PWS is made up of multiple buildings and campuses with uneven surfaces and terrain. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will spend most of the time standing indoors in the coffee trailer. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but machines can get loud for those with sensitive hearing.
